better late than never, right? :)

Here were my answers to GAIA's scholarship competition...I hope in some way it lets others know that its ok to make changes in life, for life is all about choices and the "unexpected". Also I hope it leads others to self-reflect about their own lives and to discover what they REALLY want out of life. Enjoy :)

After profound self-reflection, I discovered my genuine calling: to aid and regain self-confidence in others through my work as an upcoming dental hygienist.

No greater joy exists than helping others feel great about themselves. As a child, I aspired to become a doctor. Despite not coming from a wealthy family, my parents allowed me to dream big and taught me the importance of an education. I excelled because of their support and would love to give others that same feeling of self-worth, through my own expertise. After graduating from college last year, I discovered that continuing my studies to be the doctor I dreamt as a child no longer fit me as an adult. The decision was by far the hardest, not only for me personally, but because I didn’t want to let my parents down. Nevertheless, I had to be true to myself and take a leap of faith into another field. I found a possible fit in dentistry as a dental hygienist. The profession would support my fundamental objective to aid and educate people, while still being medical and hands-on. Also, being a woman who plans to have a family one day, the flexibility in work schedule would complement my need for balance within my professional and personal life. I’m a believer that when professionals discover their true fit in life, the people they serve benefit more. The dental hygienist may not encompass a similar prestige as the dentist, but it has never been about that for me. As long as I’m content within myself, I’ll reach bliss and share my spiritual wealth with whomever I come in contact with.

Instead of solely existing to get paid, I would aspire to contribute to society in a field that wouldn’t seem like work to me. I chose to pursue a career in dentistry because improving and educating people about teeth can be rewarding for both patient and professional. Furthermore, a beautiful smile can really boost self-confidence and it’s undeniably contagious. I love the quote from Joseph Addison: “What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity…” So if I could contribute to one more confident smile unveiled for the world to behold, I wouldn’t ask for more. My days would consist of me working from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., whether I’m teaching people about proper dental care or working alongside my dentist. I would come home to my family to spend quality time and even dedicate some time to myself every now and then so that I’m mentally and physically healthy to serve others. I also hope to travel to poverty-stricken countries around the world a few times a year and extend my dental assistance in those areas. My life would be devoted to educating people about the importance of dental care and spreading smiles and self-confidence here and world-wide. I’m excited to have discovered a field that fits my objective in life. Everyone has a special way of contributing to the betterment of the society; with this scholarship, I’ll be a step closer in attaining the position to carry out my life’s ambition. Thanks for your time and consideration.
